Dr. Lila Elliott serves as a distinguished Suicide Prevention Social Worker at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), where she provides critical mental health support to veterans for the last three years, drawing on her expertise in trauma-informed care. However, for 16 years at the Department of Justice, she sharpened her leadership skills, spearheading impactful initiatives that promoted social justice and community welfare. Her academic journey was remarkable, encompassing a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Human Services Counseling, a Master’s in Social Work, and a Doctorate in Social Work from the University of Kentucky, all earned with distinction, including a 4.0 GPA during her doctoral studies. Dr. Elliott’s research, rooted in the Empowerment and Resilience Framework (ERF), explored the impact of childhood trauma on the educational aspirations of African American women, delivering transformative insights for higher education. Her contributions reached far beyond her professional and academic endeavors. She received the prestigious United Health Foundation Diversity in Health Care Scholarship, recognizing her academic excellence and dedication to health equity. As former Editor-in-Chief at the University of Kentucky, she influenced scholarly discourse, and her mentorship of numerous scholars and colleagues highlighted her commitment to developing future leaders. A dedicated member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Dr. Elliott lead community service initiatives that advance mental health awareness and education, strengthening her advocacy for marginalized communities. Married to her lifelong partner Donye “Mr. Heartbeat,” mother to Jhaydon, now 21, and Jayshawn, now 17, and devoted to her Rottweiler companion named Ghost, Dr. Elliott exemplified resilience, having overcome a challenging upbringing as the third of four siblings to become a trailblazing scholar and advocate.
